Makeup for all
Makeup Made Easy
A makup artist reveals tips everyone can use.
I’m a self-professed makeup junkie. I love it all: eyeshadow, lipstick, mascara, you name it. Still, if I’m left wandering Sephora or some drugstore I can get lost in the sea of all the colors and brands—aching my brain to remember the lessons and tips the makeup artists I’ve met have given me (Brown or black mascara? Peach or pink blush? And what about eyebrow pencil?)
It seems strange to me that I have amassed so much makeup and yet, without the aid of some department store makeup artist, I’m lost.
To try and make makeup easy, I asked Vinnetta Scrivo, makeup artist at the top NYC salon Eva Scrivo, to reveal some colors and tips that work on—everyone. No matter what your eye color, skin color, hair color.
After all, who can remember what colors go with cool-toned skin, warm-toned skin and what about if you have both?
When it comes to eyeshadow, Scrivo says a soft taupe eyeshadow, like the Bobbi Brown Basic Eye Palette pictured above ($45, Bobbi Brown counters and online) looks good on everyone and makes blue or green eyes “pop.” A less expensive version can be found at drugstores nationwide, such as Physician’s Formula Shimmery Quad Eye Shadow, below, $6.75.
Instead of reaching for black mascara, try brown. A dark brown mascara, like Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara above ($14, Clinque counters and online) or any drugstore brand, is universally flattering and gives a soft look to the eye, Scrivo says.
Don’t neglect your eyebrows—they frame the face. “My own personal makeup trick is to warm up my eyebrows with a soft chocolate brown eyebrow pencil” Scrivo says, such as Philosophy’s Supernatural Brow Pencil shown at top right ($18, Philosophy). “The warm tone softens the face.” However, blondes should stick to a warm blonde eyebrow pencil, she notes.
Not sure what color blush to choose? Pick powder pink like Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Blush ($11.95, drugstores, shown below) and apply it to the apples of your cheeks and high on your cheekbone for a natural “blushed look” says Scrivo, whose personal favorite is Rose Sablée by T. LeClerc.
Finally, perk up your pout with a tangerine-peach lip gloss —it looks great on everyone.
